The Ice Trade

The ice trade was started in 1806 in New England by a man named Fredric Tudor.

Large sheets of ice were harvested from the lakes, stored in ice houses and transported by rail or barge. The use of ice revolutionized the U.S. meat, vegetable and fruit industries and bolstered the fish and brewing economies. By the end of the 19th century the ice trade  was a $28million industry employing more than 90,000 people.

The current drought has raised a heated debate about water usage trends and agriculture.  Approximately 25% of the produce for the United States comes from the Central Valley region. Water Bottle Tower

The economic value of water became apparent in the 1760's throughout Europe as individuals visited natural springs to drink and bathe in the natural mineral waters. The first documented sale of bottled water was in Boston in the 1767 by Jackson's spa. It may have taken a chunk of time of the bottle water business to boom but in 2013, Americans consumed over 10 billon gallons of bottled water- that is the equivalent to 33 gallons or 250 single serving bottles per person.

Water  Thieves

From cattle rustling to water stealing, the ways of the west haven't veered far from an old hollywood western. Water is in high demand and as a result thieves are cutting pipes and taking water from fire hydrants, storage tanks, creeks and rivers to pirate  hundreds of gallons of the liquid blue gold.

Salty Refreshment

 97% of the water on the earth is salt water. There at over 17,000 desalination plants in 150 countries world wide as of 2013. Over 300 million people rely on desalinated water as their daily water source. The largest seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant became operational in 2013 in Tel Aviv, Israel. This new plant constitutes 10% of the country's drinking water consumption and about 20% of its domestic water consumption.
